List of Mistakes I made with Encryption Crisis. =============================================== P = Problem S = Solution =============================================== Situation: Due to the fact I didn't format my HDD partitions in LUKS, I couldn't encrypt them that way. I instead decided to use ENCFS and unfortunately I made a lot of mistakes doing it. Keeping this list as a record to prevent this problem in the future. =============================================== 1. P. I made backups of certain files... but kept them on the same hard drive. Thus invalidating the fact I had backups. S. Keep backups on entirely seperate partitions, or on Nextcloud. 2. P. Clicked cancel on keepassxc when changing password after having changed it. S. Make a whole new entry and keep the old one in an archive folder, or until you are sure the old password is gone. 3. P. Used a complicated and impossible to remember passphrase for encrypted filesystem. S. Make a phrase in your head, write it down and keep it in keepass. (Basically what I do with my LUKS partition.) 4. P. Program used for encryption couldn't reliably encrypt and decrypt files. S. Make sure to see if your software is working before doing anything, or use the actual tools provided by upstream instead of a downstream GUI.
